Show Notes

Comic-Con day two was twice as exhausting as day one with twice as many people! So much so that mid-way into recording we wound up giving up and getting distracted and had to record the latter half of the episode weeks later after we recovered!

We start at a train station (sorry for the audio) with Tate and end up finishing the episode in a living room with Logan Lirette! Plus Bryan found his white whale of collectible figures: A Darth Revan that wasn't astronomically expensive!

We also discuss panels we wound up at, what it's like to go to industry parties for the con, and all the various ups and downs of navigating the crowds. Enjoy!

[00:00:00] Speaker A: You. Hi. [00:00:02] Speaker B: This is Bryce Frankens, and you're listening. [00:00:03] Speaker C: To episode 22.2 of Sneaky Geek. This is Bryce Rankins, and I just want to say thank you so much for listening. This week's episode does have a little bit of an audio peaking issue from recording at a train station, but beyond that, we had a pretty good recording session, so hopefully you guys really enjoy it. We only recorded the first ten minutes at the train station. The rest is all recorded later at Brian's house. So enjoy. [00:00:58] Speaker B: Hi, everybody, and welcome back to another exciting episode of Sneaky Geek. And by exciting, I mean relatively dull. Today was kind of a slow day, but I am here with Brian Romero. [00:01:08] Speaker A: Hello. [00:01:09] Speaker B: And Tate Reynolds. [00:01:10] Speaker A: Hola. [00:01:11] Speaker B: And we are currently sitting at a train station waiting for tram to take us back to downtown San Diego, which will be here in approximately five minutes. [00:01:20] Speaker C: And then we'll cut and then we'll. [00:01:21] Speaker B: Record on the train. [00:01:22] Speaker D: Seven minutes. [00:01:23] Speaker B: Okay, so we got seven minutes. So today we went to the con. It is Friday right now. It is Friday, yes. Friday. [00:01:32] Speaker D: Yeah, I think so. [00:01:33] Speaker A: I think. Cool. [00:01:34] Speaker B: So, yeah, it's Friday. We're going to get down on Friday. Friday. Friday. Going to get down Friday. Yeah, of course. [00:01:40] Speaker C: Friday. [00:01:41] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:01:44] Speaker B: Today we did not do. [00:01:45] Speaker A: I don't know. [00:01:46] Speaker B: It was packed. It was so packed today. [00:01:48] Speaker D: Hey, that's what Friday is. It's one of the big day. Friday and Saturday. [00:01:53] Speaker B: Big days, Friday and Saturday. A lot of really great panels on Friday and Saturday. None of which we really went to because those lines are insane. We did, however, get some cool exclusives. Tate actually went and got some cool exclusives today. Wait, did you get an exclusive, Tate, or did you just get something that was really dope? I'm talking about your Talgis. [00:02:15] Speaker E: My Talgis was not an exclusive. But I did get the exclusive gold armor astray gundam, which is a model kit, right? [00:02:26] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:02:26] Speaker B: And what grade is that? [00:02:28] Speaker E: This one was master grade. Not technically Comic Con exclusive. It's just one of the more exclusive gundams that they put out at shows. [00:02:37] Speaker C: Got it. [00:02:38] Speaker B: How much time does that usually take with a master grade? Because we've never talked about model kits before. [00:02:43] Speaker E: Model kits for this one. Depending on whether I'm painting it or not, it can take, I'm going to say, 4 hours on a really quick time. Eight if I really want to be delicate with it. [00:02:57] Speaker B: That's fair. What did you call the pieces where the trays that the pieces come out? [00:03:01] Speaker E: Runners. [00:03:02] Speaker C: Runners. [00:03:02] Speaker B: How many runners are in a master grade? [00:03:04] Speaker E: Have not checked this one, but I'm going to say at least 15 runners. [00:03:12] Speaker B: Okay, so for the record, a runner is the little plastic tray that you snap the parts out of in a model kit. [00:03:18] Speaker E: Fun bit of trivia. The original Borg cube was made up of nothing but runners. [00:03:24] Speaker B: No shit. Yeah, they just took a bunch of used runners. Or did they keep the parts in? [00:03:28] Speaker E: No, they used a bunch of used runners. You can actually see it when the Borg cube explodes. You see a bunch of little sprues and all that broken apart. [00:03:39] Speaker B: What's a sprue? [00:03:40] Speaker E: Sprue is the little bit that you cut off. [00:03:43] Speaker A: Okay. [00:03:44] Speaker B: No kidding. [00:03:45] Speaker A: Really? [00:03:45] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:03:45] Speaker B: That's amazing. I just started original or next generation again, which, for the record is if you're going to start it and you're like a little impatient, you know how you don't want to send someone straight to doctor number nine? Skip everything until will Riker gets a beard. Once he has a beard, everything's great. [00:04:06] Speaker E: That is a safe assumption for Star Trek. [00:04:08] Speaker D: It's got to be that beard power. [00:04:09] Speaker B: Beard power. [00:04:10] Speaker A: Yeah. No. [00:04:10] Speaker B: The future is run on beard. [00:04:12] Speaker E: Then he started having sex with everything that can move after. [00:04:14] Speaker A: It's true. [00:04:15] Speaker B: He became the kirk. [00:04:16] Speaker E: Around that time, he did try to escape an alien planet by having sex with a nurse. [00:04:21] Speaker B: Not as fun of a fact as the runner thing, but I'm going to take. Okay, so you got two. Then you got a tall geese which you were looking for yesterday. [00:04:29] Speaker E: Tall geese. [00:04:30] Speaker B: Was it sold out yesterday? [00:04:32] Speaker E: The special coating one was, I decided instead to get a real grade one. It's same sort of detail as a master grade, but it's the size of the high grade. 1140 4th scale versus the one 100th scale. [00:04:45] Speaker A: Got it. [00:04:45] Speaker E: Or the one 60th scale for a perfect grade. [00:04:48] Speaker C: Wow. [00:04:51] Speaker B: That'S Huge. They're big. Yeah, I bet. Okay, so we went to the Gundam booth. That was really cool. They had like 2016 Mega Man X model that I really, really wanted and then cried because it was $108. Then I played Mega Man X Legacy collection, which has this super cool boss fight, like royale kind of. You just go into the bosses. You just go fight old Mega man bosses. So I'm like, oh, cool. So it opens up and it's like, you're going to fight chill Penguin and Frost walrus. And I'm like, okay, cool. We're going to start running the gambit. We see our first two bosses and then it opens and chill Penguin and Frost walrus are in the same room. So you're fighting two bosses simultaneously. It kicked my just. I felt so ashamed also because it was like a Mega Man X legacy collection. It had all the Mega Man X powers. And so everything I know about Mega Man X controls is based on one, two, and three. [00:05:42] Speaker C: So I kept trying to do things. [00:05:43] Speaker B: That involved air dashing, and instead, I would, like, launch down with the beam. [00:05:47] Speaker C: Saber, and I'm like, now I'm in the middle of everything. Damn it. [00:05:50] Speaker E: It probably updated to frost Walrus concept anyway. So you were with the most advanced control. [00:05:57] Speaker B: Yeah, it was rough. I did not do well. And then I went over and I played Super Nintendo, and I played some Mario, and I got to world four, and I felt good about myself, so I moved on. [00:06:08] Speaker A: Cool. [00:06:11] Speaker B: Yeah, it was right before I found you guys. [00:06:13] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:06:13] Speaker B: Where did I find you? [00:06:14] Speaker D: So into my story. So Tate and I are walking around, checking out some of the booths, some of the vendors. I'm always on the lookout for cool toys and figures. And not that I have the money to get anything, but it's always cool to see what new X Men figures are out or what new Star wars figures that I haven't seen. And there's always one I've been looking out for the Darth Revan. Darth Revan is from one of the greatest video games in the history of. [00:06:34] Speaker B: Mankind, greatest rpg I've ever played, and the greatest Star wars video game I've ever played. [00:06:39] Speaker A: Yes. [00:06:39] Speaker B: That's the old Republic. [00:06:41] Speaker E: They ruined him in the old Republic, as most things did. [00:06:44] Speaker D: Yeah. So I'm always on the lookout for that figure. And it's always at least $75 to $100, because it's that rare to find. [00:06:52] Speaker B: Yeah, it's super rare. And for the record, I've gone to at least four cons with Brian now, and he's always like, I was looking for that Darth revan, and I can never find the guy. [00:07:03] Speaker D: Or I did find it, and it's like $100, or it's like $80, and. [00:07:08] Speaker B: He'Ll see it at, like 80 or 85, and he'll be like, oh, man, that's kind of good deal. But I just still can't afford that sort of thing. That's just too much for what it is. [00:07:17] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:07:18] Speaker D: So today we're looking around, and I see the reven figure. I'm like, oh, of course. There's the revin figure haunting you, taunting. [00:07:24] Speaker B: You like an asshole. [00:07:25] Speaker D: And there's the stupid sticker at $35. Yeah. I was like, wait, what? And I'm sitting there with Tate like, dude, dude, dude, look at that. It's $35. [00:07:37] Speaker B: Doing your best not to freak out. [00:07:38] Speaker D: Not to freak out, because if the vendor kind of catches on, most of them know that that figure is really rare. [00:07:45] Speaker B: Brian has been. Tate, you've known Brian for over 20 years now. Almost 20 years now. [00:07:50] Speaker E: Yeah, almost 22 now. [00:07:54] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:07:55] Speaker B: You know him better than even I know him. How bad was he actually freaking out despite trying to hide it? [00:08:01] Speaker E: Oh, he was definitely hyperventilating inside. It was deep within his soul. [00:08:08] Speaker B: So did you end up getting it? [00:08:10] Speaker D: No, not at first. [00:08:11] Speaker A: Right. [00:08:12] Speaker B: And then you found. [00:08:14] Speaker C: So anyway, you go back to the shop. [00:08:18] Speaker D: So anyways, we go back to the shop and the booth. The booth? Yeah, the booth. And I don't really know what's going to happening after that because this was like two weeks ago, right? Yeah. [00:08:29] Speaker C: For those of you who are wondering what happened after, pause a lot. But we will get to that in a minute. [00:08:35] Speaker F: And also, if Tate sounds much sexier all of a sudden, there's a reason for that. [00:08:38] Speaker C: Oh, yeah. Logan's here. And we will explain more at the end. [00:08:44] Speaker D: Keep going. Okay, so we go back, and I still don't know what the hell's going on because this was two weeks ago, and I didn't really pay attention to the booth. [00:08:54] Speaker C: And you're like, I'm going to buy the revin figure. [00:08:57] Speaker D: Is that we're talking about Revin figure? [00:08:59] Speaker A: Yes. [00:09:00] Speaker D: So I see Bryce, and Bryce is like, you're going to get it, right? And I'm like, yeah, you know what I am. [00:09:07] Speaker C: It's $35. [00:09:08] Speaker D: $35? [00:09:09] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:09:10] Speaker D: So I go back, get it, talk to the dude super cool, paid the money, talk to him for a solid minute or two about just con life in general and how things are going and start walking away. And I'm like, a booth and a half after that. And I stop and I look at Bryce and I'm like, I have no buyer's remorse at all. Like, none. I'm very happy right now. And, yeah, so that was kind of the. [00:09:30] Speaker C: That's the nice thing when you get a super cool thing that you've wanted for freaking ever at a ridiculously low. I mean, even the next day I found that same figure, and it was more expensive. [00:09:43] Speaker D: And so, yeah, so we got my figure, and I was very happy about it. And then later on, something similar happened again. I'm walking around and I've been looking for this Superman book that came out last year, and it's about the newer Superman in the reborn era meeting up with the Superman of the pre 52 era and explains how Superman's son, I think, came around. [00:10:08] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:10:08] Speaker C: Anyway, it's a tie in, sort of, with the supersons, which is fantastic. [00:10:14] Speaker D: One of my favorite DC books team up books. [00:10:18] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:10:18] Speaker D: So I found it for, like, $10. I'm like, that's really a pretty good price, but maybe I can find it cheaper later because I'm really strapped for cash right now. So we walk around a little more, we go see our good budy Dave, and he's like, hey, what's going on, fellas? And we kind of tell him, what's going on? Found my Revin figure. We were walking around, I found the Superman book. He's like, you went and got the book, right? I'm like, no. And I was like, what the hell? Why not? I'm like, well, I don't know. He's like, bro, if you don't get that book first, you're going to just kick yourself. [00:10:45] Speaker C: Can we just. Before you go any further with it, Dave was like, our weirdly sage wisdom, man. The entire con, every time, anytime I was having an issue, Tate was having an issue, Brian was having an issue. Like, we would go to Dave, and Dave would bestow upon us his conly. [00:11:01] Speaker D: Wisdom, but half the time, we wouldn't really just go to Dave about it. We just happened to. [00:11:05] Speaker C: Yeah, we'd be at Dave, and then he'd be like, well, what's going on? And then it would come out, and he'd be like, bro. Yeah, well, he wouldn't say bro. He'd be like, dude, come on. And then he would explain whatever it is we should know at that time, and then we would go solve our problem. [00:11:17] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:11:17] Speaker D: So that's what happened. Talked to Dave, and he's like, if you don't get this book first, you're going to kick yourself for it, because that's a hell of a good price. [00:11:23] Speaker C: You're not going to find that price online anytime soon. [00:11:27] Speaker D: Second of all, you're going to want to go get it later on because you're going to talk yourself into it. And once you go back to the booth, it's not going to be there, and somebody else is going to be reading your comic. And right there, I was like, shit. [00:11:40] Speaker C: Shit. [00:11:41] Speaker D: Son of a bit. Okay, I'll be right back. And went and got it. Picked it up, got it. Haven't read it yet, but I have it, and I'm pretty excited to read it. Probably do it sometime this week. [00:11:48] Speaker C: Yes. What else happened on Friday? Then after that, we went to the Star wars panel. [00:11:54] Speaker D: Yeah. So I went up there. You guys were still walking around. You guys were checking out some models. Gundam models. [00:11:59] Speaker C: We went to go look for the Gundam models. [00:12:01] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:12:01] Speaker D: And I was like, I need to go to my Star wars panel, because Star wars panel. And we were still, I don't know if you guys heard, clone wars is coming back, dude. [00:12:08] Speaker C: Clone wars is coming back. [00:12:10] Speaker F: Is coming back. [00:12:11] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:12:11] Speaker F: That's something I can actually comment on. [00:12:15] Speaker C: Anyway, you go to the Star wars panel. [00:12:16] Speaker D: So I go to the Star wars panel, and they bring out way more people than he did the last couple of years. I didn't go last year because I was working, but the year before, I went to the Star wars publishing panel, and they had a lot of the young reader books, they had a lot of the children's books and not many of the comics or the novels. And it was kind of a letdown. And so this year, I saw it again. They didn't give any specific names of who was going to show up, but I was like, you know, check it out. [00:12:39] Speaker C: Anyways, they had E. K. Johnston. They had Mark Thompson. E. K. Johnston writes Ahsoka. Mark Thompson is one of the only adult, and I don't want to say mature readers, but he's one of the older, more mature book audiobook readers. They had several writers for the comics. Several writers for the young adult stuff. [00:13:00] Speaker D: Yeah. [00:13:02] Speaker C: There was like, writers. [00:13:04] Speaker D: Twelve or 14 people up on that stage for the panel, which normally it fits five to seven. And they doubled up the whole table. [00:13:12] Speaker C: Has somebody at each mic doubled up. There's two people on almost every single mic, and then there's people on bar stools behind them sitting at this with a mic. [00:13:21] Speaker D: They were passing around. [00:13:22] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:13:22] Speaker C: With a microphone. [00:13:23] Speaker D: They're passing around. [00:13:23] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:13:24] Speaker D: So it started off with one of the heads of publishing for Lucasfilm just kind of introducing everybody. And then he introduced Mark Thompson, who. [00:13:30] Speaker C: I wasn't there yet. [00:13:31] Speaker D: I wasn't there yet. And he read a passage from the new thrawn book. But then he also did a couple of voices and stuff, which I have on my phone, which I need to upload or. Yeah, because you haven't seen him yet. [00:13:43] Speaker C: Nope, I haven't. [00:13:44] Speaker D: Oh, man. Okay, so that'll happen later. But the panel was really cool. Everybody kind of spoke on their past projects. They were working on anything of the future that they were working on. They announced a new Padme novel from E. K. Johnston, which we do have. [00:13:57] Speaker C: An interview with her that we'll be releasing later. [00:13:59] Speaker D: Stay tuned. She's so cool. [00:14:01] Speaker C: She's so cool. [00:14:02] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:14:02] Speaker D: Super down to earth, super talkative, loves doctor who, loves Star wars. [00:14:07] Speaker C: Yeah, super cool. And then Mark Thompson was super cool, too. I actually. Yeah, you talked about a brief conversation, because I didn't get to hear him talk, and I hunted him down, and I was like, listen, I never thought I'd be saying I have a favorite audiobook reader, but you're it, man. If you're reading the book, I'm in. And I sincerely appreciate everything you do and all the hard work you put in. He was really cool. [00:14:27] Speaker D: He's like, thanks, man. I appreciate that. [00:14:29] Speaker C: Yeah, just real cool. Not, like, irritated or whatever. But, I mean, I can't imagine that people are spotting him in the street and being like Mark Thompson. [00:14:41] Speaker D: But it was really cool because after the panel was all done and they showed a bunch of new comic covers. [00:14:46] Speaker C: Can we talk about what they have? Okay, so we've got new Star wars adventure comics, which are from IDW. IDW. Which is, like, the only Star wars comics that are being released basically outside of Marvel. [00:14:57] Speaker D: Right. [00:14:58] Speaker C: And they're doing a whole series of tales from Vader's castle, and it's people who get stuck on Mustafar. And to pass the time, they start telling scary stories of things that, like legends, they've heard that have happened at Vader's castle. And there's a story with Hera and Kanan, and they go through all of the eras of people from all the eras that were around when Vader was around and, like, stuff that's happened there. [00:15:23] Speaker D: And then they kind of ended that with a marvel tie in for it with the new Darth Vader series, which is fan freaking tastic. [00:15:30] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:30] Speaker C: The new Darth Vader series is going to show how he gets his castle. [00:15:32] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:33] Speaker F: Like the one they showed in rogue one. [00:15:34] Speaker D: Yes. And actually, I got my Darth Vader number one issue signed by Charles Soul, who wrote the series. And I was pretty stoked about that. Talked to him a little bit because I told my gay. Went to the panel, super excited for the new run. This was later that day, and we just, like, sat and geeked out for a hot second in the Marvel booth. Panel thing or. No, it was in the booth, but there's a lot of stuff going. There's a signing on stage, but then also the artists were signing stuff, and it was a busy time. [00:15:59] Speaker C: I got Joe Casada's autograph while something was happening on the stage. [00:16:03] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:16:04] Speaker D: Mark Brooks was also there. [00:16:05] Speaker C: Mark Brooks was there. He was super cool. [00:16:08] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:16:08] Speaker D: Oh, yeah. [00:16:08] Speaker C: I really liked him. [00:16:09] Speaker D: He's got some really cool covers coming for the X Men stuff. We'll talk about that later in a couple days. Or for the couple. He did a panel Sunday for the X Men stuff. Yeah, we'll talk about that on our Sunday episode. Anyways, back to the Star wars panel. [00:16:21] Speaker C: Then they're releasing a podme book, which we have ourselves a little tiny, semi exclusive interview. It's pretty cool. And then we also have. There's a new children's book coming out, too. [00:16:35] Speaker D: Yeah, there's a few children's books that are coming out. There's a. Oh, it's a feelings book by the same lady that did ABC three po. ABC three po. And what are the other one with the letters one? I bought them both for my nephew. I'm pretty excited for that. But she's doing those. Revealed a little bit of pages from it. [00:16:54] Speaker C: Yeah, some really cute stuff. Yeah, it's cool. And then there's a whole new series of books basically following the Falcon from solo all the way until, like, they say. [00:17:05] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:17:06] Speaker D: And they even kind of hinted at episode nine. [00:17:08] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:17:08] Speaker C: So it is a continuing story for one character who's kind of hunting the falcon, but it's going to be multiple stories about different owners of the falcon and different things that happened while it was, like, transferring from Lando to solo to Lando. [00:17:24] Speaker F: Well, so we'll see how Unkar got it then. [00:17:27] Speaker D: I hope so. Yeah, I hope so. [00:17:28] Speaker C: That'd be super cool. I didn't think about that, but, yeah, that's a big deal. [00:17:33] Speaker F: In that scene, they referenced, like, three different owners, so I'd be surprised that they didn't have those stories in there. [00:17:38] Speaker C: Yeah, it should be pretty cool. That one's looking really good. And then, of course, there's the thrawn. [00:17:44] Speaker D: Oh, yeah. Tim Kizan was there. [00:17:46] Speaker C: Was there? [00:17:46] Speaker D: Yeah, he was there. He talked about writing an old one. He talked about writing the newer book. And then Mark Thompson did the exit from it, which was really cool. [00:17:54] Speaker C: The thrawn book was really heavily pushed at the con, too. Like, there was an exclusive cover. You could pay for a signed audiobook, which was a little tin that had, like, a usb that flopped out of it and that could get signed. And I think they were actually going to let you. That one was going to be signed by Mark Thompson and Timothy Zombie. Super cool. And it was the same cost as the Thrawn book. And I didn't have money, so I didn't get it, and I was very sad about it. [00:18:20] Speaker D: Yeah, we were both pretty bummed about that. Tate got it, though, right? [00:18:22] Speaker C: Tate got a copy of it. [00:18:23] Speaker D: Really cool. [00:18:24] Speaker C: And it had that exclusive cover which has Anakin and thrawn on the COVID as Anakin instead of as Vader, which is on the COVID that you'll find in stores, which it has its own rack in the Barnes and noble. And it's like, got a whole little super. I'm super jazzed. [00:18:40] Speaker D: Oh, yeah. [00:18:41] Speaker C: But we went through that, and then we came out of that panel with, I mean, there was just so much. And that was the thing with Comic Con is there's just so much. [00:18:47] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:18:48] Speaker D: And it was really cool because after the panel, they cleared the room, or at least of the panel, but they all stayed in the hallway afterwards and hung out and talked to people. [00:18:57] Speaker C: And the Star wars show was. [00:18:58] Speaker D: Star wars show was there. So I haven't seen the episode yet, but we may or may not be in the background. You should probably look that up. We can look that up in a bit. But, yeah, so that happened. And that's where we first met Ek Johnston and asked her for the interview. [00:19:08] Speaker C: I went to go talk to her. I listened to the Ahsoka book in one shot. I listened to it from start to finish with only a pause to go to a bathroom at the gas station. And I listened to the whole thing and told her. I was like, I listened to this whole thing. This thing got me all the way to Oregon. And she was like, oh, can we talk about Ashley Eckstein's performance in that and the fact that it's award winning and she never brings it up. And it got all these, like, a Star wars book got an award for its reading, for its audiobook in a very snooty award group that's just a little bit more high end on top of being a Sci-Fi book, which is kind of rare. [00:19:48] Speaker D: Very rare. [00:19:49] Speaker C: It was a Star wars book with, like, lightsaber sounds in it and all that stuff. [00:19:52] Speaker A: Yes. [00:19:53] Speaker C: So that was really cool. And then we asked if we could interview her the next day, and she said yes, which was super cool. [00:20:01] Speaker F: How'd you guys find her the next day? [00:20:03] Speaker C: She told her she was going to be. [00:20:05] Speaker D: Yeah, she told us there. [00:20:06] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:20:07] Speaker C: Actually, I think we wound up interviewing her on Sunday. [00:20:09] Speaker D: But, no, it was Saturday. It was the next day. [00:20:12] Speaker C: Was it? [00:20:13] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:20:13] Speaker C: Are you sure? We did all of our interviews on Saturday. [00:20:16] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:20:17] Speaker D: We didn't do anything Sunday, did we? [00:20:19] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. [00:20:20] Speaker C: We played DVZ on Sunday. [00:20:21] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:20:21] Speaker C: I thought we were going to get interviews on Sunday. [00:20:23] Speaker D: That was the plan. And then it never happened. [00:20:24] Speaker C: It never happened. Okay. So, yeah. Are there any other books that we. [00:20:29] Speaker D: Forgot to mention, we have an update on the last arc of the Poe Dameron series. [00:20:34] Speaker C: Cool. [00:20:35] Speaker D: Yeah, so Charles Soul wrote those books. [00:20:37] Speaker C: He also did that Vader series. [00:20:39] Speaker D: He also was doing the Vader series. [00:20:40] Speaker C: Are these the comics? [00:20:41] Speaker D: Yeah, the comics. [00:20:42] Speaker A: Okay. [00:20:42] Speaker D: Sorry. Yeah, so these are the comics. He just announced the last arc for Poe Dameron. The last few issues have been taking place after episode eight. So they're on the Falcon, and they're heading off to wherever they're heading off to. [00:20:54] Speaker C: Wait, there have been issues after episode eight of things happening after episode eight. Oh, I got to read these. [00:20:59] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:21:00] Speaker D: So I have a few of them. I need to pick up the rest. [00:21:01] Speaker F: That's brave of lucasfilm to do, so let's do that. [00:21:04] Speaker D: Because that's what he was saying. [00:21:05] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:21:05] Speaker F: You know how hungry fans are for any kind of. [00:21:08] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:21:09] Speaker D: So basically, these happen, like, in the couple hours after they're on the Falcon escaping, and Rey comes back, and she's with everybody for the first time since episode seven. [00:21:17] Speaker B: Right. [00:21:18] Speaker D: And she's like, what have you been up to? And Poe's like, try to mutiny. Yeah. So Poe tells the story of how he escaped Jaku and found his way back to the resistance. So he was telling that story, and then they're leading into where the rest of Black Squadron was, which is his personal squadron that General Leia was sending out to do secret missions and stuff. [00:21:39] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:21:39] Speaker D: And so you have, like, snap Wexley and a few of the other pirates. [00:21:45] Speaker C: He sounds like an intergalactic man of mystery. [00:21:47] Speaker D: Yeah, he's not lame. Sorry, spoilers. He's cool. So he was in episode seven, and him and few other pilots, actually. [00:21:56] Speaker C: Just the son of Porkins, basically. [00:22:01] Speaker D: Sorry, Greg. [00:22:02] Speaker F: The line continues. [00:22:03] Speaker D: Yeah, there's a few pilots that aren't in episode eight that are in episode seven. This kind of tells the story of what they're doing, and they're off trying to find help after everything goes down with Starkiller base. And they're like, or General Leia is like, we need help. [00:22:17] Speaker C: They're about to come after allies, our home. [00:22:20] Speaker D: And they kind of answers the call, and they find out that after Starkiller base destroys Hosnian prime, the whole galaxy is now in disarray, and everybody's just trying to figure out their own shit instead of helping out with the resistance. [00:22:34] Speaker C: Yeah, they can't help the resistance because they're so busy trying to cherish themselves. Yeah, we just lost. How many planets? [00:22:39] Speaker D: Well, we all lost the main one. [00:22:40] Speaker F: They lost five, didn't they? [00:22:42] Speaker D: And the moons or the whole system. It was a weird. I didn't like Star killer base plot. That was dumb. Anyways, that's a whole nother podcast. [00:22:50] Speaker C: So the Poe Damron series is going. Sorry. [00:22:53] Speaker D: The last few issues are focusing on what they're doing and then how they're coming back from nice, from being off screen and kind of being back into the forefront. Hopefully they'll bring it back in episode nine and see how that goes from there. And that kind of covered the Star wars panel, I think the major stuff, at least. [00:23:08] Speaker C: For sure. [00:23:09] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:23:10] Speaker D: Hey, Clay, what's going on? [00:23:11] Speaker C: Hey, I'm recording. [00:23:13] Speaker A: You're recording? Yeah. [00:23:15] Speaker C: Hi, everybody on the podcast. Welcome to the world of being edited out later. [00:23:37] Speaker D: But, yeah, so after that, we just kind of walked around the floor a little bit more. [00:23:42] Speaker C: There was a huge adventure time panel that day. [00:23:45] Speaker F: Wait a second. Are we going to talk about the fact that the Clone wars is coming back? [00:23:49] Speaker C: We talked about that. By the way, clone wars is coming back. [00:23:55] Speaker D: Yeah, it is. [00:23:56] Speaker C: Just in case you didn't know. [00:23:58] Speaker A: Hey, Clay, did you hear that? [00:23:59] Speaker C: Did you hear Clone wars coming back? Yeah, you guys talked about it earlier. It's weird. [00:24:04] Speaker D: Oh, man. I didn't think so. [00:24:07] Speaker C: Weird. [00:24:08] Speaker D: All right, so we did a lot of walking Friday, and then we. [00:24:14] Speaker C: So after that panel, isn't that when we went to the wired party? [00:24:19] Speaker D: We did go to a comic con. [00:24:21] Speaker C: Party like cool kids. [00:24:22] Speaker D: So they were offering free booze and. [00:24:25] Speaker C: Free drinks and more importantly, free food because we didn't want to pay gas lamp corridor prices. [00:24:31] Speaker D: No, we did. So we got there, met up with some friends, checked the spot out, and hung out there for pretty much like the rest of the day. [00:24:40] Speaker C: Oh, my God. He didn't know. Party in the USA. He didn't know. [00:24:44] Speaker D: Prince. [00:24:45] Speaker C: Prince. No, he kept playing prince, but when he played prince, it was fucking Purple Rain. Oh, yeah. Purple rain at a party. [00:24:51] Speaker D: I mean, we all. [00:24:52] Speaker C: Can we back up? [00:24:52] Speaker F: You wanted him to play party in. [00:24:54] Speaker C: The USA, girl, you want to get a party to get down? Hey, party in the USA. Maybe the Cupid shuffle. The Cupid shuffle is a little too organized. Gets the people going. [00:25:07] Speaker D: Does it, though? The haya? [00:25:09] Speaker C: Yeah, dude, girls go crazy for Haya. I get Haya. Darude. Sandstorm. He did play that. Yeah, he did play that. [00:25:18] Speaker D: He did play that. [00:25:19] Speaker C: He had that. He had that, but he didn't know. Party in the USA and he didn't know. Heya by outcast. [00:25:24] Speaker D: And then he started playing the DJ does. [00:25:27] Speaker C: And then at one point, he played the peanut song, and it wasn't even a remix. [00:25:30] Speaker D: It was straight up. It was hilariously awkward. [00:25:36] Speaker F: It sounds like a guy who only djs comic con parties. [00:25:40] Speaker C: Yeah. But you know what? I went to anime Expo and I went to a club that was exclusively for people who were going to anime Expo that year. And you know what that DJ did? Played super dope remixes of video game music. Because that's what you do when you're playing for geeks. And this guy was nobody. But you want to know this. I will say this. That DJ did something wonderful. The entire party was banded together talking about this DJ. You could make friends with anybody at the party going like, so, is this awful? And then everyone would be like, right. [00:26:13] Speaker D: We'Re talking so terrible. [00:26:15] Speaker C: No kidding. You don't say. I basically just said the equivalent of, how about this heat? But it worked. This. [00:26:21] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah. [00:26:23] Speaker C: Anyway, we closed down the party. We closed down the party. And there was a bartender there named Tom who made me were the. I am officially a gin man. [00:26:34] Speaker D: Yeah, that. [00:26:35] Speaker C: Yep. Yep. Good job, Tom. And then I met some super cool night. [00:26:42] Speaker A: Good night. [00:26:43] Speaker C: I met some super cool people. [00:26:45] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:26:45] Speaker C: We're going to leave it that she's cool. [00:26:47] Speaker D: Yeah. [00:26:48] Speaker C: And then we left the wired party when it closed, but we took the stairs, and we discovered that the staircase was right next to the entrance to the pool. So we made a mental note. And we'll come back to that later. [00:26:59] Speaker D: Yes, we will. [00:27:00] Speaker C: Then we went downstairs and went outside. And then we went home and got ready for another party, which we showed. [00:27:05] Speaker D: Up a little late for because I don't know how to read emails. [00:27:09] Speaker C: No. But then we went to the party and we played. And this is what makes a cool comic con party. First of all, the music was great, and I'm pretty sure they played some sort of, like, outcast or something at some point. But they had arcade machines. It was on a rooftop. [00:27:21] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:27:22] Speaker C: And they had arcade machines. It was all around. [00:27:25] Speaker D: It was the weta. Six foot, gentle giant shindig. [00:27:29] Speaker C: Yeah. So basically a company that does a ton of stuff for Weta workshop. Well, there's a workshop in New Zealand and they're incredible. And then combine them with a company that basically builds the really high end professional booths and then a company that builds the high end merchandise. [00:27:47] Speaker D: Replicas. [00:27:48] Speaker C: Yeah, the replicas, movie props. So you got all three of those together, and it's just all these super cool industry people. I met a guy who actually works in. Actually, at the Wired party, I met a girl who worked in VR porn. And then at this party, I met a guy who wrote scripts for porn games. I don't know why they were both there and why neither of them knew each other, but I met both of them at the party. I met both of them at separate parties. And then I met the girl who makes shitty robots on YouTube recently. She just had brain surgery recently. Had brain surgery. I saw her scar and everything. She was. [00:28:28] Speaker D: She was really cool. [00:28:29] Speaker C: She was really neat. [00:28:29] Speaker F: Seemed like it. [00:28:31] Speaker C: And we talked for a little bit because I love the concept, because it's basically like, let's solve engineering problems in the worst way possible. And then there was a bunch of other really cool industry people there. And then I played pole position with some other industry dude, and we went back and forth going, trying to beat the video game. Pole position two. And by beat the video game, I mean just get the high score. I'm just trying to make sure that I make it very clear that we were playing pole position, which is an arcade game and not some other fun thing that happened with the guy who worked. [00:29:00] Speaker D: It was not a stripper. [00:29:02] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:29:03] Speaker C: Anyway, so then I was walking around. This is when the bad things happened. Bad things at the end of the party. Sorry. Anyways, we'll talk about the show. [00:29:16] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:29:18] Speaker D: So I'm walking around schmoozing, saying hi to people that I know or saying hi to people I don't know. And then I run into Ming Chen from comic book man, and we're just sitting there talking. And so I'm like, oh, I got a podcast. He's like, you got a podcast? How is it going? Like, when did you start? And he was genuinely interested. He's like, I'd love to be on it. If you guys are recording. Like, we're recording tomorrow. [00:29:39] Speaker C: We will make time to record you. Super cool, dude. [00:29:42] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:29:42] Speaker D: And so I chatted with him for a little bit. Bryce came over and introduced them, and. [00:29:46] Speaker C: Then we met one of the lead designers for Disney's newest jewelry line. She was super cool. Her name was Allison. We met a few art directors, and it became just a big networking event by the end of it. Here's my card. Here's my card. We just went back and forth, and, yeah, it was super cool. So we'll have that Ming Chen episode coming up also later. [00:30:07] Speaker D: We might smash all the episodes together. [00:30:10] Speaker C: We'll figure it out. [00:30:11] Speaker D: And then we closed down the party, and they kicked us out. So 30 minutes later, we actually left because we didn't leave. [00:30:18] Speaker C: Right. [00:30:18] Speaker D: We were too busy schmoozing and hanging out. [00:30:19] Speaker C: Yeah, we were having a good time, and I had a vip wristband so I left them, and I was like, I'm going to vip because I can. [00:30:27] Speaker A: Good. [00:30:27] Speaker C: And so I went over to vip, and you know what? VIP had slightly better booze and no arcade machines. They really were missing out. And I didn't drink anything over there because I was still working on my Tom Collins from over in the other spot, which, by the way, was very good. [00:30:40] Speaker F: He's a gin man now. [00:30:41] Speaker C: Yeah, I'm a gin man now. [00:30:42] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:30:43] Speaker C: Anyway, then we left, and then we said, do we want to go home right now, or do we want to walk down Gaslamp corridor and watch the show? [00:30:50] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:30:50] Speaker D: So tay and I were like, yeah, it's getting late. Let's go home, Bryce. Like, but I want to walk around. [00:30:53] Speaker C: So I was, well, and now, last year, Comic Con had a bunch of themed bars, and it was really. [00:31:00] Speaker D: They usually do. [00:31:01] Speaker C: There were a bunch of bars that were all themed and not just like, hey, we decorated for Comic Con, but, like, a company full on decorated bought out them and said, hey, you're making this in the theme of this movie coming out. You're making this in the theme of this movie coming out. So I thought we might find some of those. And we didn't find any, but we did find the dark side of Comic Con, which is the show. [00:31:21] Speaker D: I don't even know if it was Comic Con as much as just late night San Diego gaslighting, maybe either way. [00:31:28] Speaker C: So we saw some of the worst displays first, some of the best. [00:31:33] Speaker F: Can I cut you off, you guys, off for a second? Not all the listeners, myself included, have had the pleasure of going to a con before. [00:31:41] Speaker A: Okay. Yeah. [00:31:42] Speaker F: So, especially Comic Con in particular. What is the show? Is the show a bar or you guys? [00:31:47] Speaker D: No, we're getting there. [00:31:48] Speaker C: The show is what we refer to as the end of the. We also refer to when people stumble in at 02:00 at Denny's as the show. The show is a term that we use lovingly for the shit show. The shit show that's about to happen. Drunken, all of the drunk people, because. [00:32:05] Speaker D: This is right around 02:00 a.m.. 130. No, it was around 130. [00:32:09] Speaker C: This is not a comic con exclusive by any means, but at this particular juncture, at 130 to 02:00 we saw some of the worst displays of public intoxication. It was so hilariously, there were people holding other girl. There was, like, one girl holding another girl's ponytail, normally reserved for your friend's bathroom here. It was just the gutter. One girl walking around desperately trying to find a place to pee with the sagely advice of her friend, who said, just David's way in the cars. We saw one dude very carefully with small taps on either sides of his shoulders. So this is a podcast, and I'm demonstrating, guiding his friend, keeping him from falling off the sidewalk. [00:32:47] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:32:50] Speaker C: I got offered a joint of marajuana. [00:32:54] Speaker D: That was not pot. [00:32:55] Speaker C: And I looked over at Brian and Brian looked at me and I went, yeah, no. [00:33:03] Speaker D: It was a clove. It was definitely not pot. [00:33:05] Speaker C: Yeah, either way, don't do it. [00:33:08] Speaker D: Yeah, you don't want that nonsense. [00:33:09] Speaker C: But I mean, no. There was some later rolling and additions to said, but there were offers of drugs, there were drunk people everywhere. There was vomit. There was trash. Just tons of trash. It was awful. It was disgusting. And the next day on the gas lamp corridor, it was clean and shiny and rainbows. It was super weird. Then we got on our uber and our lyft, and then we got back to the car and then we went to go to a Denny's. And the Denny's over in Chula Vista has some serious problems. Like, it smells like urine and there's cockroaches inside. So we didn't go to that Denny's and went to another Denny's. [00:33:48] Speaker A: Down. [00:33:48] Speaker D: We tried going to a del taco. [00:33:50] Speaker C: We tried going to Del Taco. Just found another Denny's. So we went to that Denny's. [00:33:53] Speaker A: No. [00:33:54] Speaker C: Show at that Denny's. No, but that's okay. We kind of got it already. And then we went home and we went to sleep and I said, I'm getting up in the morning. I'm leaving by 09:00 if not sooner, because I'm going to try to get an autograph because Saturday was the Steven universe signing as well as the cartoon network creator signings. And so I'm like, I'm going to get up. I can manage on 4 hours. And nobody believed me. And to be continued. [00:34:21] Speaker D: We'll leave it. That's.
